Management team

James Tugendhat, Chief Executive Officer

James Tugendhat serves as Health Dialog’s Chief Executive Officer, having come from Health Dialog’s United Kingdom affiliate,Bupa Health Dialog, where he served most recently as Managing Director. While at Bupa Health Dialog James also served as a member of Health Dialog’s board of directors, and continues to do so as company CEO. 

Prior to Bupa Health Dialog, James held a variety of executive positions in consumer packaged goods companies, including Method Products and Diageo. Before these positions, he was Commercial Director of Bupa International, the leading international health insurance unit of Bupa.  James started his career as a management consultant with Marakon Associates, a US-based consulting firm. 

His nearly 20 years of experience in dealing with global healthcare strategies and consumer perspectives allow James to understand Health Dialog’s health plan and employer customers, who continue to focus on strengthening member and employee engagement.

James earned his bachelor’s and master's degrees from Oxford University in England.

Mark Hampton, Chief Financial Officer

Mark Hampton joined Health Dialog in July 2008 as Chief Financial Officer, coming from Health Dialog’s parent company, Bupa.  Mark was Bupa Group Treasurer for three years. Based in London, he was responsible for the group's financial risk management, investment, and funding. 

Mark has over 20 years of senior finance experience gained in a variety of companies and sectors, including insurance, manufacturing, and property. This covered all aspects of finance with direct responsibility for accounting, tax, treasury, and corporate finance. In addition to this, Mark spent time with KPMG Consulting assisting a variety of clients in structuring and managing their finance functions.

Mark holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Birmingham and an MBA from the University of Durham, both in the UK, Mark's native country.

Bill Pelzar, Chief Information Officer

Bill Pelzar brings more than 20 years of experience to his role as CIO for Health Dialog. Prior to joining Health Dialog, he served at Gartner Inc. as Region VP for the Executive Programs business unit. Before that his roles include SVP and CIO for the College Board, where he was responsible for all aspects of IT and business strategy, and SVP and CTO for Thomson Healthcare, where he was later appointed SVP and CTO for Thomson Scientific, Reference and Healthcare, a multi-billion dollar vertical market division.

 

Before Thomson, Bill held senior-level technology management positions for Grumman Aerospace on NASA’s Space Station Program and with Primark within the TASC and Disclosure business units. Bill holds a BS in industrial technology from ASU.

Barry Dyer, Executive Vice President, Human Resources

Barry Dyer has 25 years’ experience in HR Development.  Prior to joining Health Dialog, he was Group Organization Development Director for Bupa based in London.  Barry's responsibilities included the provision of a change consultancy service, executive education for the top 100, HR systems strategy and HR shared service.  

Previous roles included Director of Organizational Learning at Commercial Union, which became CGU and then Aviva, the UK’s largest general insurer.  His career commenced with British Airways, beginning as an engineer and then moving into a variety of roles with operations, sales, marketing and customer service.

Mary Jane Favazza, Executive Vice President, Client Operations

Mary Jane Favazza has nearly 25 years experience in operations, business development, and client management in both the healthcare and financial services industries.  Coming to Health Dialog almost 10 years ago, Mary Jane currently holds responsibility for Client Operations.  Her role entails oversight and management of day-to-day client operations as well as long term client satisfaction and program management.  In her tenure at the company her roles have included leadership positions in client development, service delivery, implementation, and several cross-functional initiatives.  

Prior to joining Health Dialog, Mary Jane held management positions with a global financial services firm as well as an innovative entrepreneurial start-up.  

Mary Jane holds a BA from Smith College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Bob Darin, Executive Vice President, Research & Development

Bob Darin has 17 years experience in health care analytics and operations management. He current serves as Executive Vice President, Research and Development for Health Dialog, where he has overall responsibility for product development, analytics, and consumer decision aid development. He also has responsibility for Health Dialog’s unwarranted variation research and analytic development in the UK, Australia, Spain, and France, and in 2010 led a project measuring unwarranted variation in hospital services in Australia. In previous work at Health Dialog, Darin also served 4 years as Senior Vice President of Client Operations from 2003 to 2006. Darin’s prior executive experience include his most recent position as Vice President and General Manager of MediQual Services, a business unit of Cardinal Health, from 2006-2008. His other management experience includes positions at Health Benchmarks, Inc. and Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. He holds an honors MBA in analytic finance from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, and he received a magna cum laude degree in economics from Harvard College.

Robert Mandel, MD, Executive Vice President, Market Development

Dr. Robert Mandel has more than 15 years of senior leadership experience in health systems and health plan management. Prior to Health Dialog, he served as Senior Vice President of Health Care Services for BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. Before joining BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee in October 2008, Dr. Mandel served as Vice President of Health Care Services for BlueCross BlueShield of Massachusetts.

After attending Princeton University, Dr. Mandel received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. Dr. Mandel also holds a master’s degree in Business Administration from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia.

Dr. Mandel is a graduate of the AAHP Leadership Program, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also holds membership in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Physician Executives.

Peter Goldbach, MD, Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Peter Goldbach brings more than 30 years of experience to Health Dialog’s management team, including 15 years of experience in medical administration and 17 years maintaining a primary care and pulmonary disease practice. Prior to joining Health Dialog, Dr. Goldbach served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Med-Vantage Inc., a healthcare informatics and engagement company. Before that, Dr. Goldbach was Medical Director for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, where he provided medical direction for the company's "Pay for Performance" and eHealth programs. In other previous roles, Dr. Goldbach has held CEO, trustee, and medical staff president positions with two Boston-area community hospitals. 

Dr. Goldbach received an undergraduate and master's degree from UCLA and his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency at George Washington University Hospital, and his Pulmonary Disease fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center / UCLA School of Medicine.

Jeff Doctoroff, Senior Vice President and General Counsel

Jeff Doctoroff is a corporate and health care lawyer with over 12 years of  wide-ranging legal experience.  Jeff joined Health Dialog's legal department in 2006 and was appointed as General Counsel in October 2009.  Prior to joining Health Dialog, Jeff practiced law with the Boston office of Ropes & Gray, a major international law firm, specializing in transactional work.  Jeff received his BA from Harvard College and his JD from the University of Virginia School of Law.
