BOSTON, Mass. – August 3, 2010 – Health Dialog today released a new report, "Care Management Meets Health Reform: Implications for Health Plans in an Evolving Consumer Marketplace". This research provides insights on how health reform will change consumers' health insurance purchasing patterns and how health plans can position themselves for success in this shifting environment.
As a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of March 2010, a large number of consumers – potentially over 100 million by 2016 – will move from one insurance market to another, including the individual market, Medicaid, Medicare, and the employer-sponsored market. Health Dialog's new report provides a detailed market segment analysis complete with insights into consumer perspectives on insurance purchasing decisions.
Overwhelmed with economic anxiety and information overload, consumers will focus on cost, simplicity, personalization, and brand reputation. To be successful, care management firms must play an active role with their health plan customers to help them better understand consumer behavior, control costs, and develop new member experiences that enhance the health plan brand.
"Health reform will change the health insurance market considerably. Understanding the new consumer segments and their wants and needs is critical," said Elyse Pegler, MPH, one of the authors of the paper. Co-author David Costello, PhD, continued, "Over 100 million consumers could change their health insurance by 2016. That's a lot of people in motion. To thrive in this new healthcare economy, health plans must become experts in understanding consumers and the best ways to effectively reach them."
